These range from the development of new computer programmes to advertising and PR. The qualification "Linguist" (for professional purposes "Applied Linguistics") allows you to engage in practical work in the field of Computational Linguistics (automatic translation, creating text corpuses, linguistic support (soft), etc.).

The mission of the study programme Applied Linguistics (Bachelor’s degree)is the training of specialists in 2-3 foreign languages (especially English) and using these languages in the development of computer programmes. This ensures competitiveness on the labour market both in Ukraine and abroad.

Professional knowledge and skills obtained after completing the programme:

Specialists in Applied Linguistics obtain professional knowledge and form professional skills for the following tasks:

  • Translation of scientific and technical literature;
  • Development of language interface and dialogue systems of communication with the computer;
  • Creating funds of natural language;
  • Development of electronic dictionaries and terminology data banks;
  • Improving existing and creating new systems of computer translation ;
  • Computer abstracting, annotation and indexing of scientific and technical documentation;
  • Computer maintenance thesauri and database information retrieval systems;
  • Content analysis of texts of mass communication;
  • Development of knowledge bases for expert systems;
  • Computer design.

Programme requirements (ECTS credits).

In accordance with the Standard on Higher Education set for the programme Applied Linguistics (Bachelor’s degree), 240 ECTS credits are awarded in total. The curriculum of the programme Applied Linguistics (Bachelor’s degree) incorporates: mandatory courses (163,5 ECTS credits) including course papers (1 ECTS credits) and elective courses (63 ECTS credits). Practical training includes internship – 10,5 ECTS credits. Bachelor’s final examinations give 3 ECTS credits

  • the ratio of credits between parts of the programme may vary slightly from year to year.

Educational goals of the programme:

The general goal of the study programme Philology. Applied Linguistics (Bachelor’s degree) is to train, in line with European educational standards, competitive professionals in Applied Linguistics by giving them fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the area of linguistic studies of texts and language data by means of using computer/information technologies which may ensure the graduates’ broad access to promising careers and further training.

The objectives of the study programme Philology. Applied Linguistics (Bachelor’s degree) are designed to:

 - ensure training of bachelors capable of solving in professional practice complex professional problems and tasks on the basis of their developed competences using in that process their L1, English, and the second foreign language they were learning;

- provide basic knowledge of fundamental and applied educational subjects necessary for the competence of bachelors in Applied Linguistics;

- ensure the interconnection of all the competences developed by students;

- familiarize students with effective tools for creation, editing, and analyzing texts in their L1, English, and the second foreign language they were learning using computer processing for such creation, editing, and analyzing;

- develop future applied linguists’ professional competences by teaching them different methods, methodologies, techniques, tools, and skills required for completing all kinds of professional tasks using for such completion their L1, English, and the second foreign language they were learning;

- develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to both theoretical and applied problems in linguistics;

- develop the students’ powers of analysis and judgement;

- develop graduates as social individuals who are ready to solve certain problems and tasks of communicative and social activity;

- form students’ positive attitudes to both linguistic and non-linguistic constituents of their successful professional careers;

- provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to further studies in linguistics, related areas, or in multidisciplinary areas that involve linguistics, computer/information technology, foreign language teaching;

- develop students’ abilities for self-evaluation and self-improvement in their professional field;

- develop in students, through their studies, a range of generic skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment as well as in their future career in the private or public sector;

- develop the skills of interpersonal communication;

- to provide students with opportunities of having initial preparation for additional training in their future Master’s degree courses with the aim of acquiring the knowledge and skills required for work as a teacher of English and/or the second foreign language they were learning.
